Dolma La Pass

Unveiling the Mystery of Dolma La Pass

Dolma La Pass stands as an emblem of spiritual significance within the expansive Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Situated at the highest altitude along the pilgrimage route, it attracts thousands of Hindu, Buddhist, and Bon pilgrims, as well as curious Western travelers who seek the road less traveled.

The Spiritual Significance

For Hindus, the journey around the majestic Kailash Parbat is called “parikrama,” while Buddhists and Bon followers refer to it as “kora.” Dolma La Pass holds a pivotal role in this circumambulation, endowing it with tremendous fame and reverence.

The Pilgrim’s Tale

Having been fortunate enough to embark on the awe-inspiring Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, my journey unfolded with crossing the small bridge that led me to Shiwachal. Here, amidst rocky terrain adorned with colorful clothing-draped cairns, the blessings of Goddess Dolma, the divine consort of Lord Shiva, guided me through Dolma La Pass effortlessly. Witnessing the enchanting north-eastern face of sacred Kailash Parbat as I ascended further, I felt truly blessed.

The Challenge of Dolma La Pass

While navigating through Dolma La Pass may present its difficulties, it is by no means insurmountable. Having experienced high-altitude treks in India and Nepal, such as Roopkund, Dodital Darwa Pass, Poonhill, and Everest Base Camp, I was mentally and physically prepared for the treacherous climb. Most of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra encompasses relatively plain terrain, with the steep incline appearing as one approaches Dolma La Pass from Deraphuk. However, with cautious steps and perseverance, the ascent becomes conquerable.

Altitude and Precautions

Dolma La Pass sits at an elevation of 18,471 feet (5630 meters) above sea level, surrounded by notable landmarks like Drirapuk Monastery and Gauri Kund. Given the thin air at such heights, it is crucial to avoid lingering for an extended period to minimize the risk of Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS). Adhering to this advice, my fellow travelers and I spent only a brief moment at the summit before descending towards the enchanting Gauri Kund.

Embracing the Sacred

Gauri Kund, nestled beneath Dolma La Pass, holds its own enchantment. This sacred lake, known as Tuje Chempo Dzingbu, captivates pilgrims with its breathtaking beauty and spiritual aura. As I experienced the first darshan of Gauri Kund, I felt a profound connection to the divine.

Unraveling the Legends

Dolma La Pass, also referred to as Dola Mala Pass, holds a deeper significance. Few are aware that “Dolma La” represents Goddess Parvati Maa, the divine consort of Lord Shiva, whose divine abode rests in the holy Kailash Parbat. Moreover, it is also recognized as Drolma La Pass, Zhuomala Pass, Zhuomala Mountain Pass, and Tara Pass. These lesser-known facts weave a tapestry of mystique around Dolma La.

Location and Cultural Significance

Dolma La Pass finds its place between Deraphuk and Zuthulphuk, situated in the western region of Tibet Autonomous Region, within the Ngari Prefecture. This hallowed ground is a site of worship for Buddhists and Bon followers, where they honor departed souls and partake in the sacred act of kora.

THE PATH ADORNED

A remarkable sight along the journey to Dolma La Pass is the vibrant presence of Buddhist flags adorning the entire path from Darchen. Fluttering in the wind, these flags act as beacons, guiding pilgrims through the arduous trek. However, as one descends towards Gowri Kund, the realm of Hinduism becomes predominant.

Unveiling the Engravings

Similar to other Buddhist sites, I encountered intricate engravings and inscriptions on the rocks near Dolma La Pass. Written in the captivating Tibetan script, these artistic expressions emanated a sense of awe and wonder.

Conclusion

A visit to Dolma La Pass is an unparalleled experience, tightly woven into the fabric of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. As the highest point along this pilgrimage, it challenges devotees both physically and spiritually. In the end, it is the triumph over these challenges that makes Dolma La Pass an unforgettable milestone on the path to enlightenment.
