Embarking on the Kailash Yatra via Simikot can be an adventurous and potentially boring journey. This route will lead you through eastern Nepal and into China, specifically through the Burang border in western Tibet.

To begin this route, you’ll need to acquire the Chinese Group Visa from the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu. Indian citizens should obtain the visa from the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi, while non-Indian passport holders or NRIs can follow the same process.

The visa application typically takes about three days. While our partner agency handles your visa arrangements, you’ll have the chance to explore the famous Pashupatinath Temple, as well as visit the Jal Narayan Temple and Guheshwari Temple.

Once your Group Visa is secured, you’ll travel overland to Tibet, entering through the Burang border port in western Tibet. Unlike other travel routes to Kailash, this journey requires a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalganj, followed by flights to Simikot. From Simikot, the adventurous Kailash Yatra involves a six-day trek to the China Border at Burang port. Alternatively, a less adventurous tour offers a helicopter flight to Hilsa near the border.

While we don’t particularly recommend the Simikot to Hilsa flight option for the Kailash Yatra becuase of lack of opportunity for proper acclimatization to high altitude of Tibet. We highly recommend the route via Lhasa City and Kyirong for a memorable Kailash Mansarovar Yatra experience—unless you specifically prefer the six-day trekking tour.
