This serene lake finds its place along the path to Mount Kailash, descending from Dolma-La (Dolma Pass). The ancient tale surrounding Gauri Kund, depicted vividly in the sacred scripture “Shiva Purana,” is a captivating narrative that unfolds with intrigue and fascination.

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati, through a divine alchemy, breathed life into an image of Lord Ganesha formed with soap lather at Gauri Kund. Parvati intended to place Lord Ganesha at the entrance of her bathing spot, guarding it from intruders. When Lord Shiva, unaware of the situation, approached, Ganesha dutifully denied him entry. Offended by this act of disrespect, Lord Shiva severed the boy’s head. Overwhelmed with grief, Parvati beseeched Shiva to restore their son to life. In response, Shiva replaced Ganesha’s severed head with that of a wandering elephant, thereby resurrecting him.
