Tirthapuri

Tirthapuri, also known as Bhasmasur Parvat, is a highly spiritual and awe-inspiring pilgrimage destination nestled near the revered Mount Kailash in the Himalayan region. With its profound spiritual significance and miraculous aura, Tirthapuri has earned a special place in the hearts of millions of Hindu pilgrims. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed to be the site where Lord Vishnu vanquished the demon Bhasmasur Rakshas.

This sacred place has garnered immense praise from devotees worldwide, particularly for its renowned hot springs known for their healing properties. The hot springs of Tirthapuri offer solace and relief to weary pilgrims, alleviating their physical ailments and rejuvenating their spirits.

For those seeking profound spiritual fulfillment, Tirthapuri stands as an indispensable destination after visiting the sacred Mount Kailash and the pristine Lake Manasarovar. This Buddhist pilgrimage site, situated along the Sutlej River, holds great significance for Hindus and is considered one of the most important sites near Mount Kailash. It has earned the distinction of being the third most holy pilgrimage site in Western Tibet, treasured by Buddhists and cherished by all who visit.

Traditionally, pilgrims embark on a spiritual journey that begins with the circumambulation of Lake Manasarovar, followed by the sacred Mount Kailash, and culminating in the exploration of Tirthapuri. This revered sequence holds deep symbolism and serves as a testament to the profound spirituality of the region. Tirthapuri’s medicinal hot springs and geysers offer a perfect respite for pilgrims to soothe their weary feet and find relaxation after the arduous circumambulation of Lake Manasarovar and Mount Kailash.

The hot springs of Tirthapuri hold a special connection to Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasanbhava, and are a source of ultimate delight for travelers seeking relief from the fatigue of the Kailash Kora. The holy bathing ritual in these healing waters is followed by the circumambulation of the site. It is believed that a single Kailash Kora is equivalent to 13 Tirthapuri koras, and completing one Tirthapuri Kora takes approximately an hour. While this Kora provides an engaging route for pilgrims, it is optional if time constraints arise.

The Kora Path includes the Tirthapuri Monastery, a spiritual destination dedicated to the worship of the goddess Dorje Phagmo. The caves and monasteries along the Tirthapuri Kora add an additional layer of spiritual exploration and may require extra time to fully appreciate. Tirthapuri is renowned for its association with Guru Rinpoche and his consort Yeshe Tsogyel, embodying a sense of divine presence and grace.

In addition to worship and rituals, Tirthapuri offers devotees the opportunity to search for pear-shaped relics during the spring season. These relics, found in water and earth, are considered auspicious and are believed to bring good luck and fortune. Furthermore, they are thought to possess curative properties, providing solace to those suffering from various ailments.

Embarking on the one-hour Kora of Tirthapuri rewards pilgrims with breathtaking and scenic vistas. The journey commences from the hot springs, gradually ascending to a specific spot known as the “cremation point,” where remnants of old clothes and rags create a solemn atmosphere. Continuing eastward, one encounters the “sour” earth hole, where seekers diligently search for stones with healing properties. Moving further ahead, the “sweet” earth hole awaits.

Of all the fascinating aspects of Tirthapuri, the karma-testing hole holds particular intrigue. Located beyond the “sweet” earth hole, it features a rock beneath a prayer wheel. Seekers of divinity enter the hole and retrieve two stones. If the stones are both white, it signifies good karma. One white and one black stone indicate the need for improvement, while two black stones suggest unfavorable karma. Thus, this pilgrimage offers a profound opportunity to assess and improve one’s karmic balance.

Concluding the journey, pilgrims can proceed to the Tirthapuri Monastery, surrounded by a circle of mani stones to the south. It is said that during the enshrinement of Guru Rinpoche, various deities danced with joy at Tirthapuri, adding to its spiritual significance and splendor.

While Tirthapuri’s hot springs and monastery are accessible by road, it is important to note that public transportation services are unavailable for reaching these sacred sites. Planning your expedition accordingly will ensure a seamless and spiritually enriching experience in this divine and awe-inspiring pilgrimage destination.
